69 Years of Ministry

West Virginia Rescue Ministries, well into its second half century, developed from humble beginnings into a dignified, active, compassionate ministry dedicated to one purpose - that of aiding the physical and spiritual lives of individuals in need.

Founded in 1937, the Mission avails itself to the homeless as a haven from distress, structuring hope for the future. Beginning in a one-room store front on Jackson Street, to its present multiple locations consisting of: chapel, day room, offices, and thrift store, the Mission has seen sixty-nine years of tremendous growth, not only in the physical, but in the spiritual lives of the men, women and children who come to the mission for help.

Many expansions were necessary over the years to accomodate the growing needs of the community. In 1970, Friendly Homes was built to provide housing for the elderly. WVRM also operates The Penny Pincher thrift store to provide for the material needs of families.

West Virginia Rescue Ministries' uniqueness arises from its never deviating stand on the Word of God and its importance in stabilizing a life spiritually, as well as meeting the physical and temporal needs of the individual. Spiritual life is the basis for effective life-style change that will last.

WVRM is unique because it provides services in a Christ-centered atmosphere. WVRM is the largest facility of this type in North-Central West Virginia and has been a leader in the fight against homelessness and poverty.
